Day Hike
A sacred lake above the world — 4,300m altitude, wildflower meadows, and immediate reward.
Overview
Bhrigu Lake sits at 4,300 metres in a glacial bowl above Manali — named after the Vedic sage Bhrigu who is said to have meditated on its shores. The trail begins at Gulaba and climbs through rolling meadows carpeted with wildflowers in season, past grazing horses, and into alpine terrain where the lake appears without warning — still, impossibly blue, and surrounded by snow. It is one of the most rewarding single-day altitude hikes in Himachal Pradesh.
The Trail
Depart early to maximize daylight. Drive to Gulaba (trailhead) — approximately 1.5 hours from Jispa via the Atal Tunnel, 30 minutes from Manali.
The first section climbs through dense rhododendron forests and breaks into open meadows at around 3,500m. In June–August, these meadows are a tapestry of wildflowers. Steady uphill — take it slow.
Above 4,000m the vegetation drops away. Rocky terrain, occasional snow patches. The lake appears suddenly over a ridge — glacial blue, ringed by scree and snow. Time at the lake for photos, snacks, and silence.
Retrace the route downhill — faster going, but watch your knees on the steep sections. Back at Gulaba by 2–3 PM. Drive back. Hot chai at a dhaba. Evening rest at your dome.
Key Highlights
Be Prepared
May to October. June–August for wildflowers. September–October for clear skies and autumn gold. The lake may be frozen or snow-covered in May and late October — still beautiful, just colder.
